Garrett County Historical Society Museum

A repository of local artifacts and treasures, the Garrett County Historical Society Museum offers a glimpse into the daily lives of the early settlers and more recent residents of this mountainous area. The museum library boasts numerous local genealogical records and other historic documentation. Located along Second Street in Oakland, the museum is open to the public.

National Heritage Museum

Located on the first floor of the Friend Family Association Library Headquarters building, the museum depicts a history of early life in the United States, the history of Western Maryland, and life of the early settlers in this country.

Smiley's Fun Zone

Offering First Class River experiences! Rafting on the Upper Youghiogheny (pronounced: Yock) Cheat, Big Sandy, and Russell Fork was pioneered by Precision Rafting over 26 years ago. Guided whitewater raft trips in Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, and Kentucky. Precision Rafting wants to make your next rafting adventure a very special and memorable experience.


Adeventure Sports Center
ASCI leads guided raft trips around its mountain-top whitewater course in state-of-the-art self-bailing rafts. The entire experience lasts 2 hours, which includes about 30 minutes of gearing and safety orientation. An average trip includes at least 4 descents down the course. ASCI guides will lead guests through everything from a straight shot of the rapids to surfing holes, to grabbing eddies and otherwise learning the basics of maneuvering a raft in whitewater. While the focus is on the pure thrill and challenge of whitewater, guests should gain insight into the nature of whitewater hydraulics, technical raft guiding, eddy snagging, surfing and basic whitewater safety. Depending on the group, willing guests will be allowed to 'co-guide' the raft.
